Week 3

Week 3 already! I hope you have all had a relaxing weekend and are ready for another action packed week!

We are supposed to be having swimming this week, however our school pool is currently having heating problems. At this stage, we will not be swimming tomorrow but have our fingers crossed the pool will be back up and running later in the week. I will let our class know as soon as I know more information. Thank you for your understanding and patience with this.

Homework Project Due on Tuesday - the homework task that was given out last week is due on Tuesday. Children will be presenting their idea of a local issue and solution to the class, and we will be voting on which idea we would like to use for our next Student Volunteer Army project. I am looking forward to hearing all about the brilliant ideas our children have come up with!

Athletics practise continues tomorrow afternoon and on Wednesday. Please bring proper school uniform PE gear for this. Our Athletics day is scheduled for Monday next week and we are in desperate need of Parent Helpers. Please look at the notice below and contact Lorna if you are able to help out. It will be hugely appreciated!

Enjoy your evenings and I look forward to having another week filled with fun and successes!

Nga Mihi,
Nicole Hunter

ACTION DAY! Our Garden Display

This morning Room 12's Student Volunteer Army, led by our two platoon leaders Imogen and Maiah, walked down to Ranolf Medical Centre to deliver our creations and set up our garden display.

Over the past two weeks we have worked incredibly hard to plan, design, create and then present our sculptures. We worked in groups to collaborate on these designs, and collectively as a class worked together to make sure each team's product fitted in well with our spring theme. Our platoon leaders coordinated the entire project, making sure we were all on track with the timeline, that our creations were weather durable, and that they suited the theme.

Everyone did an amazing job. They all displayed creativity and worked hard to collaborate and debug any issues that arose, and most importantly they all problem solved so that their creation was their very best work.

We know that our service to Ranolf Medical Centre has met our goal, which was to bring joy to sick children in a creative way! If you are ever there, have a look out the window and see if you can spot all of our creations. If you want to learn how to make them, have a look for our book in the waiting room that describes each creation and also has instructions for how to make it yourself!

Ka Pai Room 12! I am so proud of you all and am looking forward to seeing what our next service to our community will be!

Week 2

Kia ora Whanau,

I hope you have all had a lovely long weekend and made the most of the gorgeous weather we have been blessed with!

This week we have two key things happening...

Thursday - ACTION DAY!
We will be walking to Ranolf Medical Centre at 9am to set up our Garden Display and we should be back at school in time for morning tea at 10.30am. I am in desperate need of 2 parent helpers....please contact me if you are available to help out.

Friday - I am away on Friday at a Course. Our class will have a lovely reliever and will be continuing their new homework project (this will be given out tomorrow and is not due until Tuesday Week 3).

Other notices for Room 12 this week include...

Homework Project - This is focused on finding a local issue and coming up with a solution that we can carry out as a Student Volunteer Army. It would be great if you could please support your child in researching and choosing an appropriate issue/solution that will benefit our community. Things like helping out in retirement homes (showcasing skills, making them things etc.), something to support sick children in the hospital, charity work, cleaning or improving local parks or DOC areas in Rotorua, using our cooking skills to provide food for children in need etc - basically anything that we are able to organise at school and then complete in an action day in Week 6 of this term. The homework task is to then create a presentation (in the style of their choice) to persuade the rest of the class that we should choose their issue & solution. These presentations will be done in Tuesday in week 3 and we will vote on which action we want to take.

NO SWIMMING THIS WEEK

Athletics & Go4It: Athletics practise is on Wednesday afternoon and Go4it is on Thursday afternoon. Please bring your PE gear on both of these days.

Progress Towards Our Garden Project

This week we have begun our first Student Volunteer Army Challenge. We are aiming to bring joy to sick children, by being creative in designing a spring themed garden display for Ranolf Medical Centre. Imogen and Maiah are our platoon leaders; they visited the Medical Centre on Tuesday to draw a map of the garden and put together a plan. We have now been working in small teams to plan and create various sculptures for the garden. Here is a sneak peek into our creations in progress!

Reminder: we are going to set up the garden next Thursday and we need a few parent helpers to support us please! Please let Mrs Hunter know if you are able to help out. Thank you :)

Swimming

This week we had our first week of swimming! The weather has been so nice, so we have been very lucky to cool off in the water. Today we practised our freestyle technique and focused on rolling to breathe after every third stroke.

Reminder: We do not have swimming again until Week 3....so don't bring your togs next week.
