Christmas Packages for Lara Lodge Residents

When we returned from our visit to Lara Lodge, Room 12 decided that they would love to celebrate Christmas with the residents of Lara Lodge. We decided that we would use our creativity skills to create individual Christmas Packages for each resident. We have decided that each package will include:
* A Card
* A Packaging Item (Box, basket etc)
* 2 other Christmas themed creations.

We are also going to do some baking for the staff at Lara Lodge to share.

Have a look at some photos of us in the process of making these packages!

Week 7 Notices

Kia Ora Whanau,

I hope you have all had a glorious weekend despite the gloomy weather we have been having. This week is one of our final consistent weeks in our classroom, as with the end of the year nearing and production nights approaching there will be children in and out of the classroom for various things.

We had a very successful visit to Lara Lodge for our Volunteer Project. The children blew me away with how respectful and positively they interacted with the elderly; I am incredibly proud of them. Due to how successful this was, as a class we have decided to make individual Christmas packages for each of the residents. These are meant to be crafts, but children may come home with some items they need to bring in for their creations (such as empty jars etc). We will be working on these this week, and hope to have them completed by the end of week 8.

Here are the notices for this week:
Swimming: We are scheduled to have swimming on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week in the afternoons. The weather is not looking promising, but hopefully we will be able to still go. Please remind your child to pack their togs on these days this week.
Production Rehearsals: Our class will have rehearsals every day throughout week 7 and 8. Main actors will then have further rehearsals on top of this. It is really important that we all practise our parts at home as well, and keep a positive attitude towards this.
Ahurei Performance: Our Kapa Haka group are performing this week on Wednesday. Tickets are available and the show begins at 7pm.

Looking Ahead to Next Week (Week 8):
Student Led Celebrations: On Tuesday, week 8, we have student led celebrations. This is not a parent teacher interview, but a time where your child can share their proudest moments and achievements from this year with you. It would be great to see you all there, and will be happening straight after school next Tuesday.
Year 6 Pilgrimage: This is on Thursday in week 8 (6th December). A notice will be coming home this week with more information about it.
Assembly: Friday next week is our assembly day. We will be planning our assembly over the next week and would love for our whanau to attend! It will be on Friday 7th December starting at 2.05pm.

Our Special Visitor!

Today we had a special visitor in our class for the afternoon...Imogen's Mum (Mrs Blundell)! She came in to give us an insight into her daily job where she is a Doctor in the emergency department of the Rotorua hospital.

Mrs Blundell brought in a life size skeleton (which Richard quickly named 'Henry) and taught us a lot about our bones and what happens when we injure them. She answered lots of our questions about being sick and looking after our bodies, including talking about donating organs and having special operations such as heart or kidney transplants. We learnt all about our heart and even got to observe and feel a deer's heart and a pig's eye! We also had the opportunity to practise tying slings on each other and listening to each other's hearts through a stethoscope.

Thank you so much for coming into Room 12 this afternoon Mrs Blundell. We really enjoyed learning from you and value being able to learn about our human bodies from an expert! We particularly liked how you answered all of our questions and let us have a go at some of the practical skills doctors have to do everyday. Thank you!!

Our Lara Lodge Visit!

Today we had our trip to Lara Lodge for our Student Volunteer Army Project. This went exceptionally well and all of us (children, adults and elderly residents) had such a fun and joyous time!

Our goal was to bring joy to the elderly people, and we most definitely achieved this beyond our expectations! We interviewed them, read them our stories that we wrote especially, did some crafts, played some games, provided and shared morning tea, and then finished with a concert to showcase our talents.

Feedback from parent helpers and staff from Lara Lodge was that our children were absolutely amazing and a true blessing to the elderly residents day. It is a memory they will keep for a long time and will be forever grateful.

We had so much fun that we have come back to school and are busy planning a second interaction with our elderly friends...we are going to make individualised Christmas gifts for each of them! Some of them may even come to our assembly in week 8 to reminisce on our day today and this is when we will be able to present them with our gifts....watch this space!

Room 12, you have all done an AMAZING job. I am so proud of how you worked as a team during the planning process, persevered to create your own stories, and displayed all of our school values during our visit. You should all be so proud of yourself and I hope you treasure this experience for a long time :)

We all want to say a huge thank you to our parent helpers for coming today. We wouldn't be able to do these things without your ongoing support!
