STEAM Extravaganza

On Tuesday we had our STEAM Extravaganza day. This was a time where we could explore a range of different STEAM related activities that require problem-solving.

Before we attended the workshop we signed up for, we had a guest speaker called Chris who works for Microsoft. He talked to us about the importance of Whanaungatanga (caring for our whanau and world) - in the STEAM context this relates to the idea that every problem solved has happened because somebody has CARED about it. Problem-solving is a vital skill in the 21st Century, as it is necessary for us to be active participants in our world. There are so many things in our world that we CARE about that need to be improved and fixed; think about poverty, pollution, hunger etc. Building problem-solving skills through STEAM activities are the first stepping stones we need to be able to help solve these problems when we are older!

We then chose one workshop to attend that was organised and run by some of our wonderful senior students. Imogen and Leah ran a breakout EDU challenge that they created all by themselves - ka pai girls, we are so proud of you! Senior students from other classrooms also ran some other workshops including minecraft, stickman animations, mBots, brainteasers, pixel avatars, scratch and stop motion photography. We had so much fun exploring new skills and activities! Well done to everyone for branching out into the unknown, giving new things a go, and persevering through problem-solving situations. Have a look below at some photos from today!
